Video Poker is a popular game that can be enjoyed in casinos across the globe, or in your house on your personal computer, using a net connection. The rules are very straightforward and consist of the player trying to achieve the greatest combination of cards possible in order to acquire money. In this respect it’s much the same as a normal game of poker, without the involvement with any other players. Of course, tactics employed during a physical game of poker, such as bluffing, will be useless here.

The game of Electronic Poker starts when the gambler puts credits (either tokens, tickets or money) into the machine and presses the play button. A five card hand will then be "given out" on the video screen.

The Video Poker game also has hold buttons, and gamblers should now pick which cards to hold and which to throw away. For the cards the gambler wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any amount of cards they wish, from all to none.

After the bettor has selected which cards she wishes to retain, they should press ‘draw’, which will mean that any new cards will be needed they will be given out. The hand is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it matches any of the winning hands shown on the pay out schedule.

Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money growing for each and every better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the pay out schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that skillful gamblers are able to select the most beneficial machine every instance.

After the initial round has played out, the player can either choose to continue on and try to to maximize their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any money that they may have won. Further, a few styles of the game allow the gambler an opportunity to increase their profits, in which instance another round is played. There are also variations between specific games, with some virtual decks including wild cards and other differing aspects to increase playability.
